Rebellious Sounds for a Historic New England Mansion
When The Vanderbilt in Newport, Rhode Island, emerged from a major renovation, it needed music that would bridge their storied past with their bold new vision.
The Challenge
The historic sailing town property – once home to businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt – carries a provocative legacy of secret parties and clandestine rendezvous. Today's Vanderbilt honors this rebellious spirit through moody old-world still life paintings and décor that invites guests into what can only be described as sophisticated whimsey – a cabinet of curiosities come to life. Our team was tasked with creating a sonic identity that would complement this juxtaposition of classic and irreverent while enhancing the property's unique personality.
Our Approach
Our team dove deep into the property's history and character, exploring the tension between its Gilded Age roots and contemporary playfulness. We crafted a collection that moves between 70s AM rock and yacht rock that nods to Newport's sailing heritage, weaving in psych rock for edge, 70s funk and quirky soul for personality, and eclectic grooves that keep spaces feeling alive and intriguing.
The music transforms throughout the day, matching guests' energy from morning coffee to evening cocktails. In the restaurants, we've designed a progression that subtly shifts as day turns to night, creating distinct moods that complement the dining experience without overwhelming it.
The Impact
Music has become an essential element in bringing The Vanderbilt's unique vision to life.
"Bespoke Sound's music curation brought our hotel to life. After we underwent a complete redesign, the music was the final and invaluable piece to the puzzle. It was the element that tied everything together and now allows our guests to have a full-sensory experience when they stay with us or dine at our restaurants."
– Kari Costas, Director of Experiences
The result is a property where every element – visual, tactile, and sonic – works in perfect harmony, giving guests an experience that feels both timeless and surprisingly fresh.
